Canadian Music Conductor: „A Very Extravagant Program“

Canadian conductor Kerry Stratton is the conductor and musical director of the Toronto Philharmonia.

He had his first Shen Yun experience at Toronto’s Canon Theater at the weekend.

[Kerry Stratton, Conductor]:
“I liked it very much. It was a very extravagant program. I liked it. The dancing was like nothing I have ever seen before.”

Shen Yun Performing Art’s rich programs take the audience through 5000 years of Chinese culture, from the founding of the Chinese civilization through the cultures of different dynasties and ethnic groups.

[Kerry Stratton, Conductor]:
“I would just say that it’s pretty obvious that this tradition understands theater, but not just the theater of the eyes but of the ears as well — and the theatrical effects in the orchestra matched perfectly. I know it was mainly dance but many of the effects would work perfectly well in an opera.”

It was the erhu, a traditional Chinese two-stringed violin, that touched a man whose first instrument was a violin.

[Kerry Stratton, Conductor]:
“Oh it’s a distinct sound. A distinct sound. And I think the erhu has such a plantiff human voice quality to it. Really and of course I liked all the Chinese percussion. It’s so expressive, it’s just wonderful.”

As Shen Yun continue their global tour, excitement is building about their first performances in Hong Kong next January. Hong Kong will be the closest that Shen Yun has come to performing in Mainland China.
