Ballet School Principal Charmed By Shen Yun

John Maitland is an academic principal at one of Canada’s leading ballet schools. He saw Shen Yun in Toronto on Friday night.

[John Maitland, Ballet School Principal]:
“It was amazing. I think it’s a true example of how the performing arts can really convey a message. The entertainment factor, the educational factor, the quality of the performers. The artistic abilities of the dancers, of the musicians. It was totally overwhelming.”

[John Maitland, Ballet School Principal]:
“So ethereal. So simple in many ways and yet so demanding. Certainly the sense of  compassion. There was a sense of humor at times. It was certainly a message of hope and inspiration.”

Mr. Maitland says he would encourage all his friends to see Shen Yun.

[John Maitland, Ballet School Principal]:
“Not knowing any Chinese and not knowing the culture. I still felt very welcome, very much at home.” “There was a story conveyed through much of the dance and it was done in such a professional way that I totally was captivated and totally understood exactly what was going on so I felt very much at home in this culture.”

He says Shen Yun is a „wonderful example“ of the professional arts and performing arts coming together.

“Looking back at ballet there are so many women I think involved in ballet so it was so nice to see so many men involved tonight. And I would love more of our boys and Canadian culture to see this. I think we would turn out a lot more dancers.”
